Poetry - "Friends?"

Friends?

it has been said
that women and men
can not be friends

and i pondered long and hard
my dear
i pondered long and hard

thinking, is it so?

no

but only on one condition:

that neither friend
has expectations
nor “feelings” for the other

now if both friends share
the tinglings of Eros
a most blessed event occurs...

two friends become lovers

however, if only one
bears the cross of romantic burden
then the saddest, most tragic thing happens...

after much pain and suffering
the one must eventually accept
they will never be
with the one they’ve come to love

and the other loses their friend
whom they find so funny
and whose company they so enjoy

all because one can't give more
and the other won't settle for less
